Toyota Recalling 670,000 Prius Hybrids in U.S.

Toyota is recalling 670,000 of its 2005-9 Prius hybrids to fix issues involving the loss of steering and the hybrid powertrain shutting down, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The United States recall is part of a worldwide recall of 2.77 million vehicles. In America, only the Prius is affected by the recall.

The cars are being recalled because the metal used for a steering component was is not hard enough, resulting in the possibility of the part wearing out “if the steering wheel is frequently and forcefully turned to the full left or full right position while driving at low speeds,” and that “could result in the loss of steering ability,” according to the report filed with the safety agency.

A second recall covers 350,000 of those same vehicles and involves replacing an electric water pump that could fail and shut down the hybrid powertrain system. Toyota determined the cause of this problem was a coil wire that could be scratched, resulting to corrosion and sometimes to a complete break.

At this time, Toyota is unaware of any auto accidents in the United States that are related to either of these recalls.
