NuvaRing Side Effects

NuvaRing is one of the many contraceptives that are available to women who want to prevent pregnancy. The product is a flexible, transparent ring that releases synthetic forms of estrogen and progestin into the bloodstream. Similar to oral contraceptives, NuvaRing suppresses ovulation. NuvaRing is worn for three at a time; it is then removed for a week to allow menstruation to occur.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved NuvaRing for the market in 2001. The birth control device was originally manufactured by Schering Plough, but it was later acquired by Merck. NuvaRing quickly became a popular birth control option for millions of women in the United States. In 2010, more than 5 million prescriptions were filled for NuvaRing. However, women began to experience adverse side effects from using the contraceptive device.

If you or a loved one has experienced a NuvaRing side effect, you may be eligible for legal and financial recourse. Contact a NuvaRing lawyer to explore your legal options.

Adverse Side Effects of NuvaRing

Shortly after NuvaRing was released on the market women began reporting adverse side effects. Many women reported developing blood clots after using the birth control device. NuvaRing is considered to be a third generation contraceptive; these type of contraceptives use progestin desogestrel. Many healthcare professionals believe that desogestrel increases your chances of developing a blood clot.

The British Medical Journal published an article in 2009 that found who used third-or fourth generation contraceptives were twice as likely to develop blood clots that women who use second- generation contraceptives.

The FDA has received over 1,000 reports of women who developed blood clots after they were prescribed NuvaRing.

In addition, the following side effects have been associated with NuvaRing use:

  • Heart attacks
  • Anxiety
  • Increased risk for breast cancer
  • Toxic shock syndrome
  • Strokes
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Pulmonary embolisms
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

Women should call their physicians, if they experience any of the following symptoms while using NuvaRing:

  • Breast lumps
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding during more than one menstrual cycle
  • Sudden fever
  • Dark urine
  • Light-colored bowel movements
  • Persistent pain in your calf
  • Dizziness or fainting
