Traffic intersections play an important role in daily traffic flow across the United States. Alabama drivers depend on these traffic signals to indicate when they are able to safely cross an intersection. Sadly, far too many negligent, careless drivers choose to ignore these lights, causing approximately 2 million motor vehicle collisions each year, as reported by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration.
In addition to more than 2 million red light accidents, intersection collisions account for 8,000 traffic fatalities and 700,000 injuries each year. Running through red lights has become a dangerous, growing trend in the United States, and in the state of Alabama. As motorists, defensive driving plays a critical role in the ability to avoid this type of crash. Sadly, however, many of these situations are simply unavoidable, as factors such as speeding or reckless driving allow for minimal reaction time.
The Fatality Analysis Reporting System, under the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), estimates that red-light runners account for 165,000 fatally injured victims annually. Even worse, in about 50 percent of these collisions, the innocent driver is the one who suffers harm. Therefore, for every two red light crashes, one innocent driver is killed due to the carelessness of another motorist.

Red Light Crash Causes
A poll from the NHTSA reveals the upwards of 97 percent of all motorists believe that red light runners are a major threat to their safety. In fact, studies have showed that one-third of all drivers have known someone personally who has been either injured or killed in a red light crash. Red light runners in Alabama present a serious threat to all motorists on the roads and highways.
A large number of contributing factors cause people to run through a red light. However, the following are some of the most commonly seen causes of red light crashes:
- Frustrated drivers
- Texting and driving
- Driver approaches an intersection and increases speed to “make the light”
- Tailgating too closely to see a change in traffic lights
- Distracted motorists who fail to notice the change in traffic signals
Texting and driving has become the fastest growing cause of motor vehicle collisions in the United States. As the country slowly reacts to this serious issue, more and more laws have been passed to ban the use of cell phones while operating a motor vehicle. Sadly, texting while driving still accounts for thousands of injuries and fatalities annually. Regardless of the reason for running a red light, some sort of negligence or distraction is generally to blame.
The following characteristics are most commonly seen in those who fail to stop at red lights:
- Driver with less education
- Operating the vehicle along, with no passengers (especially no children)
- Has received a ticket for running a red light in the past
- In a rush to arrive on time to work or school, often during morning hours

Red Light Cameras in Alabama
Currently, there are about 541 communities in the United States which are using some sort of speed or red light cameras. The camera use varies throughout each city and state in terms of whether they utilize speeding and red light cameras, just red light cameras, or no cameras at all. In the state of Alabama, Montgomery is the only specified location with red light cameras. The owner of the vehicle which crosses an intersection at a red light is held liable and is automatically issued a citation.
When a driver in Montgomery crosses an intersection at a red light, 2 images are taken of the vehicle, including one of the license plate tags. Traditionally, the enforcement penalties include a $100 fine and 3 points on the driver’s license. With the auto enforcement penalty, however, drivers will receive a $110 fine and no points assessed to the license. Alabama residents must pay attention to the placement of automated red light cameras in their local areas.
